Greetings from my Treadmill

This post is coming to you straight from my treadmill (with some editing, hyperlinking, and picture insertion at a later time). Yes, as I write/draft this post I am walking on my treadmill. Walking at a slower pace, but walking nonetheless. Every step counts!

Earlier posts this month titled A Work in Progress and Lessons Learned from Home Improvement provided a glimpse at a minor home improvement project. I had a room in my basement updated (a little) to change an unused space into a home gym.  The photo above and the ones below are the final product as of now. I’m still working on the decor. If you have read other past posts this month, the Iowa State assessories should come as NO surprise.

Improvement projects take time. I still need the mirrors hung (they are too heavy to do myself) and I have visions of other motivational decor. For now, the space is motivating me to get up in the morning and walk 30 minutes before getting ready for work. In the evenings I lift on the days I don’t see my personal trainer!

So, the big question … How am I writing this WHILE ON the TREADMILL? I have been researching treadmill desks for a while. Many are costly! There are many options on Amazon like this TrekDesk Treadmill Desk that fits over your existing treadmill or the LifeSpan TR1200-DT5 Treadmill Desk that is a treadmill with a desk attached.

Since I already had a nice treadmill and I love DIY type projects I decided to turn to Pinterest! Check out this search for Treadmill Desks. Since I do not own a lot of tools beyond the essential hammer and screwdrivers, there were many ideas beyond my reach. I landed on this DIY Treadmill Desk – Under $50 – No Tools Required.

My actual cost was a little over $50.00 – more like $60.00 to $65.00 because I was in a hurry to get it finished. I did purchase my narrow card table from Walmart. I had PVC pipe cut at a local big box store. I also added a piece (pictured below) added to the end of each leg to add a little more stability.

An even cheaper option would have been to just put a board across my treadmill handles, but because mine were slanted I couldn’t figure out a way to level that option. I use to use a board across the handle bars of my old treadmill. It was a simple solution to a treadmill desk – way back in the late 90’s when I use to collaborate with teacher around the globe through forums at http://teachers.net/. We were using social media before social media was even a “thing.” (A topic for another blog post some day!)

10,000 steps complete today … thanks to an early morning walk and a little blogging time!

    This is ingenious! I love your idea to make a home gym. I had no idea there was even any such thing as a treadmill desk. Possibilities!

      Thanks, Marilyn! I never get my steps in since I sit for my job a lot so I needed something that allowed me to work and walk at times. I’m loving my home gym. Another time saver (saving trip to gym), money saver (I had the equipment or it was given to me) and I don’t have to pay a gym membership anymore. 🙂

    This is such a fun project. I was not anywhere near my 10000 steps today, but I did get my workout in this morning!

      The morning walk helps, but I usually still need about 4000-5000 steps the rest of the day. I sit for my job a lot – so it is still something I have to make a conscience effort on. Some days I get there, some days I don’t.
