Yesterday the warm temperatures in Iowa caused me to dream about spring. Today I am freezing! If you don’t like the weather in Iowa, just wait a few minutes and it is likely to change!
The sunny, almost spring day, prompted me to have the car washed inside and out. It was time to remove the winter grime. I enjoyed driving around with the sunroof open as I ran a few errands. At one point a favorite song, from my college days, played on the radio. (Actually it plays often since I have my Sirius radio usually set on 70’s – 80’s music.) I went back to a time. I could visualize myself walking back to my dorm, after class, on a sunny, Friday afternoon. Boston’s More than a Feeling was blaring out an open window.
“I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away
It’s more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
‘Till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin’ away
So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky
You can listen to the rest of this BOSTON song on YouTube.
It is “more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play, I begin dreaming.” I think of the great friends I made at Iowa State and I am thankful many of us still stay in touch. During that time of my life, I learned what it meant to follow your passions and give back to others. I realized my potential as an educator and that a once struggling student could actually become a teacher. Thoughts of my first years of teaching flood my mind as well. I am honored so many former students have sought me out on Facebook and other social media platforms. What a thrill to see where their lives have taken them since 4th grade!
But I also think about the days yet to come and the days that are in between. Each day is a chance to make a memory and make a difference! Each day is an opportunity be inspired. Each day is a chance to LEARN and GROW!
Did Boston plan that their song would be THE song that conjures up so many memories for me when heard years (and years) later? That OLD song that causes me to slip away?
What song brings back memories for you?
What song causes you to close your eyes and slip away?
I love the positive feeling I got from reading this post. A few songs came to mind for me.
Paradise by the Dashboard Lights when we were returning from our senior class trip on a bus and thought we were super cool to sing it at the top of our lungs. Summer of 69 and the fun we had before our senior year driving around town and the lake. Thanks for making me smile.
Thanks, Mandy! I’m pleased you felt a positive tone. Songs from our past do make us smile, don’t they – and once thought of they are hard to get out of your mind.

I was just thinking about the same thing the other day! This winter I watched Garth Brooks do his Vegas concert it made me so…happy it was like he was singing through the eras of my life. Loved it. Love your connection too. AND weather in Oklahoma is exactly the same, I’m so ready for summer!
Our lives can be remembered through the songs in our lives. Even though the artist is singing for many – often I feel like they are singing just to me.
Spring (that stays spring) and summer can’t come soon enough.

What a lovely reflection of how music can trigger a moment in time and a feeling. For me… any U2 song can bring me back to special times.
Thank you. I love U2, too! Hope you hear a song soon to trigger some memories!

Oh my gosh! I had to come back and repost the exact same song is on Glee! I’m dancing on my couch thinking it is more than a feeling! Love Boston!
How funny! Thanks for letting me know. Keep dancing!

I love this song and this post! “More than a Feeling” brings up so many different memories for me, all of them fun. I think I’m doing a song-memory post for tomorrow. Feeling inspired!
